Common Causes Related to Insomnia

Many people are interested in the causes of insomnia, as not getting enough sleep is a common and disturbing problem. When you are not well rested, you have trouble concentrating, have low energy and may not be doing your best at work or your other activities. Lack of sleep can even be dangerous if you’re driving or doing anything that requires alertness. These are some of the instigators behind insomnia in many people around the world.

People who travel frequently often suffer from insomnia. The common term for this particular form of insomnia is “jet lag.” With so many people traveling long distances around the world this type of insomnia is becoming more common. However, you don’t even have to travel to different time zones to experience problems sleeping. Some business travelers or truck drivers, for example, may drive long distances and stay in different hotels or have multiple residences. These practices go against the sense of routine that the human body likes so much. So any frequent changes in your sleeping environment can cause insomnia.

The process of getting older is another reason people have trouble sleeping. Your body produced melatonin to help you sleep but as you get older your body makes less and less of this hormone. For some people, the simple solution is to take a melatonin supplement though some fear it is unsafe. Another reason that age often impact insomnia is that elderly people often take medications for other conditions and the side effects of these medications may be difficulty sleeping. There is some argument however, that sleep is needed less by those who are older than it is by younger people. Older people who are having trouble sleeping should ask their doctor’s advice if they are having trouble sleeping.

Women also have their very own unique causes of insomnia. As you can tell from this list, women are susceptible to insomnia at just about every point in their lives, which is why this problem affects more women than men. While the above are natural causes of insomnia, if it’s a severe problem for you, your doctor may be able to recommend some kind of medication to help with it. Of course, in the case of pregnancy, make sure you get your doctors opinion before self-prescribing any form of treatment. While it’s true that not all causes of insomnia in women are the result of Mother Nature, it’s not a bad idea to at least rule them out before moving forward.

Insomnia, as we’ve seen, sometimes has a clear cut cause, while at other times the reason for it can be hard to pinpoint. No matter what may be causing your sleeping difficulty, it’s important to get to the bottom of it so you can start looking for a way to correct it. It’s important for the sake of your overall health to get a good night’s sleep so it’s time to get rid of the obstacles that are holding you back.
